Brenda A. Rangel, Ed.D.

Dr. Brenda A. Rangel is an experienced educational leader with more than 25 years in public education.  She has dedicated her career to cultivating a love of learning among students, empowering colleagues to lead high-quality schools, and collaborating with executive level peers to create systems to guide the best educational opportunities for all learners.

Her experiences in PreK-12 public school systems include accomplishments in transformational and organizational leadership, school finance, campus operations, school safety, coaching and feedback, and emerging leader development. She has focused on equity throughout her career by providing culturally relevant learning opportunities for all students by investing in and building district and staff capacity.

Currently, Dr. Rangel is responsible for leading all aspects of the Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success public charter school district, which includes six schools and two early childhood STEM sites, ensuring they adhere to its core instructional and cultural mission. In addition, she is tasked with implementing educational policies and practices that address student achievement by serving as a liaison to the Board of Education and Superintendent to attain annual goals and initiatives.

A former Area Director for Houston Independent School District, Rangel managed all aspects of the Northwest Area educational programs and oversaw the schools’ operations for 43 Pre- K – 12th campuses. Her duties included: the hiring and training of School Support Officers and Principals; directing and shaping the curriculum; mentoring new principals; coaching on Board Policy, performance and evaluation systems; setting organizational goals; acting as spokesperson on behalf of the area superintendent; conducting workshops; and allocating and monitoring budgets.

While in Houston ISD, Rangel, in her role as a Performance and Continuous Improvement Manager, she administered and monitored employee appraisal and development systems for over 60 campuses to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory policies at the state and local levels. She provided training and supported School Support Officers (SSO) and Principals on Board Policy, appraisal requirements, and performance expectations.

Prior to her work in central administration, Rangel was a principal in Houston ISD and YES Prep Brays Oaks.  In those positions, she facilitated the development of a shared vision and comprehensive school-wide plan to achieve transformation towards high expectations for all students by cultivating, hiring, and leveraging team members committed to a school turnaround model where equity and high-quality educational access is available to all students. Her experience also includes secondary experience as Dean of Instruction in Houston ISD and Curriculum Coordinator and Dean of Students for El Rancho Unified School District in Pico Rivera, CA. Rangel was charged with inspiring teachers to excel in their practice and motivating students to achieve their full potential. In addition, she provided instructional and administrative leadership to teaching and support staff, led curriculum implementation, coordinated assessments, and monitored students’ academic performance.

Dr. Rangel’s educational foundation started as an elementary Bilingual Education teacher by having the privilege of fostering a positive, engaging environment for Second Language Learners and serving as a liaison for community-based organizations to promote parental outreach and involvement.

In addition to her professional experience, Rangel is dedicated to mentoring emerging leaders and founder of the Latina Leaders Learning Group in 2016; she is a volunteer for the Texas Council of Women School Executives, Texas MS Foundation, Mariachi Festival Foundation, and a former board member of the Association of Hispanic School Administrations and the YMCA Houston.
